Furniture Removal in Madison, WI

Short answer

What a crew takes
Sofas and sleepers, sectionals, recliners, mattresses and box springs, dressers, entertainment centers, dining sets, desks, bookcases, bed frames, futons, patio furniture and office chairs. A crew carries it out of the room, so the third-floor walk-up and the basement stairs are their problem, not yours.
The free option, and who can use it
The City of Madison Streets Division collects furniture at the curb for free if your home gets city recycling collection. You file a Large Item Work Order online, choose a Sunday, set the pieces out that day and crews take them during the following work week. Pieces must be under 8 feet long and 4 feet clear of trees, cars, poles, mailboxes and hydrants, and furniture goes in a separate pile from metal and appliances. See how Madison large item pickup works.
Since January 1, 2025 that program excludes apartments, condominiums and every property with more than 8 units. Residents there go through the building's dumpster company, a drop-off site, the Dane County Landfill or a private hauler; the city's own page lists hiring a registered junk hauler as an option.
What the suburbs charge
- Fitchburg (Pellitteri, 2025): $50 per sofa, chair, table, dresser or bed frame; couches $50 for every 3 to 4 seats.
- Verona: non-metal furniture is included in the city's curbside bulk waste pickup.
- Stoughton (Johns Disposal): one bulk pickup a month on request, twelve a year.
- DeForest (GFL): one bulk item a month, under 50 pounds and manageable by one person.
- McFarland and Waunakee: free village clean-up weeks in spring (and fall in McFarland).
Every municipality's rule is on its own page; the full comparison is in bulk pickup rules by town.
Donate first
Habitat for Humanity of Dane County runs two ReStores (6201 Odana Road and 4207 Monona Drive) and offers free donation pick-up, and St. Vinny's offers free home pickup with furniture left fully assembled. The city keeps a longer list. See where to donate furniture in Madison.
Common questions
Furniture Removal: questions
Is furniture pickup free in Madison?
Yes for homes that get City of Madison recycling collection: book a Large Item Work Order and set it out on your chosen Sunday. There is no fee for furniture. Properties with more than 8 units are excluded from the program.
How much does it cost to have a couch hauled away?
National guides put furniture at $75 to $150 a piece. In Fitchburg, Pellitteri's 2025 prepaid curbside price is $50 per sofa, doubled for a sectional of 7 or 8 seats.
Can I leave furniture by the dumpster at my apartment?
Only if your property's hauler allows it. The city says dumpster companies collect large items for their customers under their own rules and possibly charges, so ask property management first.
