The Dane County Landfill charges $15.03 for up to 500 pounds of mixed trash in 2026 and $60.10 per ton above a ton. Madison residents can also use the city drop-off sites, one pickup-bed load a day.

How do I get large items picked up in Madison?
File a Large Item Work Order online, choose a Sunday, set items out that day, and crews collect them during the following work week. Items must be under 8 feet long and 4 feet from trees, cars, poles and mailboxes.
Who can't use Madison's large item pickup?
Since January 1, 2025, apartments, condominiums and any property with more than 8 units. Those residents use their building's dumpster company, a drop-off site, the county landfill or a private hauler.
Who pays Madison's large item fees?
Only homes whose recycling the city does not collect: $35 for big appliances and hot tubs, $15 for microwaves, grills and mowers, $10 or $5 per tire. Everyone else pays through the Resource Recovery Special Charge.
Can I put a TV or computer at the curb in Madison?
No. City ordinance bans it, and the city may remove it and charge $30. Residents recycle electronics free at the city drop-off sites.
How much extra trash will Madison take?
Six or more 30-gallon bags (40 pounds each) on two consecutive weeks if your cart is full. Extra recycling outside the cart is collected only twice a calendar year.
Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Madison?

Where do paint and chemicals go?
Dane County Clean Sweep at 7020 Maahic Way, $15 per trip for Dane County households. A junk crew does not load them. Clean Sweep says dried latex paint can go in the regular trash.
Does the Dane County Landfill take mattresses?
Yes, mattresses and box springs are on its accepted list, along with furniture and carpet. It refuses freon appliances, electronics and propane tanks.
Where can I donate furniture in Madison?
Habitat for Humanity of Dane County's two ReStores offer free donation pick-up, and St. Vinny's offers free home pickup. The city keeps a longer donation list.
What happens to tires?
Waste tires have been banned from Wisconsin landfills since 1995. The county landfill recycles them at $0.17 a pound; Madison charges $5 or $10 per tire only to homes with private recycling.
